Pears: A Delicious and Nutritious Fruit Crop in Pakistan
Pears, Pyrus communis, are one of Pakistan’s most popular fruit crops. Their history dates back to the Mughal period. Pakistan’s soil and climate are ideal for pear farming, which makes it a lucrative crop for farmers. This article provides a comprehensive overview on pear cultivation in Pakistan. It covers topics ranging from general information to after-harvest management.
General Information
The Rosaceae tree family includes pears. Pears are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They make a healthy and nutritious snack. The pears are used to extract juice, for canning and drying.
Climate
Pears thrive in a climate with cool winters, and warm summers. Pears are grown in Pakistan’s temperate areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Temperatures between 15degC to 25degC are ideal for pear production.
Soil
The soil should be rich in organic matter and have a good water-holding capacity. The soil must be rich in organic material and have good water retention capacity
Popular Varieties and Their Yield
In Pakistan, a variety of pears are grown.
- Bartlett: This variety is known for its high yield (between 20-25 kg/tree), and for the sweetness of its flesh.
- Anjou: This variety is known for its high yield (15-20kg/tree) as well as for its sweet, crunchy flesh.
- Bosc: This variety is known for its high yield (between 10-15 kg/tree), and its sweet, juicy flesh.
- Shan-e-Punjab: This variety is known for its high yield (between 8-12 kg per tree) and sweet, juiciness flesh.
Land Preparation
The land must be thoroughly prepared before planting pear trees. After plowing the soil to a depth between 30 and 40 cm, it should be leveled and fertilized.
Seed
Grafting is the most common way to propagate pears. Grafting is done using a rootstock such as Pyrus comunis or Pyrus Amygdaliformis.
Sowing
When to Sow: Pear grafts are best sown between February and April.
- Spacing – The typical spacing of pear trees is 4-6 meters.
- Sowing depth: For pear grafts, the sowing depth is usually 10-15 cm.
- Sowing Method: Grafts of pears can be planted directly on the field or at a nursery.
Intercrops
In pear orchards, intercropping can increase productivity and reduce erosion. Intercrops that are suitable include herbs, vegetables and legumes.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer Requirement
Age of the crop(Year) | Well decomposed cow dung(in kg) | UREA(in gm) | SSP(in gm) | MOP(in gm) |
First to three year | 10-20 | 100-300 | 200-600 | 150-450 |
Four to six | 25-35 | 400-600 | 800-1200 | 600-900 |
Seven to nine | 40-60 | 700-900 | 1400-1800 | 1050-1350 |
Ten and above | 60 | 1000 | 2000 | 1500 |
For a 1-3-year-old crop, apply 10-20kg of cowdung that has been well decomposed, 100-300gm of Urea and 150-450gm MOP per tree. Apply 25-35 kg cowdung to a 4-6-year-old crop. Urea@400-680 gm is recommended, as well as SSS@800-1200gm and MOP@600-930 gm. Cowdung@40-60kg, Urea@700-930 gm SSP@1400-1800gm MOP@1050-1350gm per tree. Apply 60 kg of cowdung, Urea@1000gm, SSP@2000gm and MOP@1500gm to trees older than 10 years.
Use the entire amount of SSP, MOP and cowdung in December month. Use half the dose of Urea in February before flowering and the remaining half in April.
Weed Control
To reduce competition in the pear orchard for nutrients and water, weed control is vital. Mulching, herbicides or manual removal can control weeds.
Plant Protection
The pear tree is susceptible to a number of pests and diseases including powdery mildew, pear psylla and pear scab. These pests and disease can be controlled with regular monitoring and integrated pest control practices.
Harvesting
Pears can be harvested from August to October depending on the type. Pick the pears at their mature stage as they will not ripen further after harvest.
